What to Do If You Get in an Auto Accident

Auto accidents can be overwhelming, even if the damage seems minor. Knowing what steps to take at the scene (and shortly after) can help you stay safe and keep the claims process moving smoothly. Here’s a breakdown of what to do if you find yourself involved in a crash.

Stay Calm and Check for Injuries

First, check for injuries. Call 911 immediately if there are any signs of injury or if the vehicles are blocking traffic. Move to a safe location if you can.

Turn on your hazard lights and document the scene with your phone if it’s safe to do so. Take photos of the vehicles, damage, license plates and the surrounding area.

Exchange Information with the Other Driver

Gather the other driver’s name, contact information, insurance details and license plate number. You’ll also want to note the make and model of their vehicle. Be polite, but avoid admitting fault or placing blame; just stick to collecting the facts.

When to Call Insurance

You should notify your insurance company as soon as possible after an accident. Waiting too long can delay the process or limit your options. Your insurer can help you understand your next steps, including repairs, rental coverage (if included) and how your deductible may apply.

If the damage is minor and no one else is involved, you may choose not to file a claim.

Is a Witness Important?

Yes. If someone saw the accident and is willing to speak up, their statement can help clarify what occurred. A third-party perspective may be helpful if there’s any disagreement between drivers or if liability is unclear. Be sure to get the witness’s name and contact information if possible.
